A method of expressing voice waveform information with the smallest possible amount of information (bits/second). With the spread of mobile phones and PHS (Personal Handy Phones), a method of storing voice information in a compact form is required in order to use the available radio frequency bands effectively and secure a large number of lines, and also in order to freely record and play image and voice information with the development of multimedia technology. The technology for this is voice (high efficiency) coding, and the current mainstream technology is the CELP (Coded Excited Linear Prediction) method. This is a method of selecting the target voice source waveform from several types of voice source waveforms stored in advance so that the difference between the two waveforms is minimized. As a result, it is possible to transmit, record, or play back voice with almost no difference in sound quality from the original voice with an information amount of 4 to 8 kilobits/second.

音声波形の情報を、できるだけ少ない情報量（ビット／秒）で表現する方法。携帯電話・PHS（簡易移動電話）の普及により、使用可能な電波帯域を有効に使用して、多数の回線を確保するためにも、またマルチメディア技術の発展により、画像と音声の情報を自由に記録・再生するためにも、音声情報をコンパクトな形で記憶する方法が必要となっている。そのための技術が音声（高能率）符号化であり、現在の主流技術は、CELP（コード化音源励振線形予測）方式である。これは、対象となる音源波形を、あらかじめ記憶されている何種類かの音源波形から、双方の波形の差が最小になるように選ぶ方式である。その結果、4～8キロビット／秒の情報量で原音声と音質的にほとんど差のない音声を伝送または記録・再生することができる。
