Luzon [island] - Luzon
Located in the northern part of the Philippines, it is the largest of the Philippine archipelago and the main island of the country. Its Chinese characters are Lu Song. Its topography is complex, with a mountain range running north to south and plains and river valleys in between, with the Bohol Peninsula extending to the southeast. Its coastline is rich in inlets and outlets. There are many volcanoes. Rice, corn, tobacco, and copra are produced on the plains, and rice in particular accounts for one-third of the country's production. It is also rich in gold, copper, iron, and manganese deposits. The population is also diverse depending on the region, but the majority are Ilocanos in the north, Tagalogs in the central area, and Bicol people in the south. It has been a Spanish territory since the 16th century, and the inhabitants have been Christianized. It became a US territory at the end of the 19th century. It was occupied by Japan during World War II. A Japanese town developed in the Edo period, and it has a deep historical relationship with Japan. The main city is Manila. 104,688 km2 . 33,342,000 people (1990).
