Illusionism

Japanese: イリュージョニズム（英語表記）illusionism

This refers to the technique and expression of plastic arts, especially painting, that gives the illusion of three-dimensionality and depth. It is sometimes called trompe l'oeil (eye trick), and the distinction between the two is not clear. Since vision is the function of the brain, which judges what the eye sees based on existing knowledge, desire, imagination, etc., it is not uncommon that what was initially considered normal vision is later found to be an illusion as knowledge and experience increase. Recognizing meaningful shapes in ambiguous figures such as stains on a wall, cloud shapes, and Rorschach personality test patterns, or thinking that withered cattails are ghosts, are examples that demonstrate the active rationalizing and organizing functions of the eyes and the brain.

造形芸術，とくに絵画において立体感や奥行きの錯覚を与える造形技法とその表現をさす。トロンプ･ルイユ(目だまし)という言葉で呼ばれることもあり，その区別は明確ではない。視覚とは眼に映るものを既得の知識，欲望，想像力などによって判断する大脳の働きであるから，知識や経験の増加によって，はじめ正常な視覚とされていたものが，のちに錯覚(イリュージョン)と判明することが少なくない。壁のしみ，雲の形，ロールシャハの性格検査図形などのあいまい図形に意味のある形を認めたり，枯尾花を幽霊と思ったりすることがあるのも，眼と大脳の積極的な合理化･体制化機能を示す一例と考えられる。
