A former town in Motoyoshi County, occupying the Karakuwa Peninsula in the northeastern tip of Miyagi Prefecture. The coastal fish species are abundant, and many people work in the fishing industry. Nori, wakame, abalone, and scallops are also cultivated. Part of the coast belongs to the Sanriku Fukko National Park. Incorporated into Kesennuma City in March 2006. 42.28 km2 . 8,661 people (2003).
