Université Catholic de Louvain (English name)

It is the collective name for the Dutch-language university Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (27,000 students) in Leuven and the French-language university Université Catholique de Louvain (20,000 students) in the vicinity. Founded in 1425 at the initiative of Jan IV, Duke of Brabant, with papal approval and privileges from the city authorities, it developed into the only university in the wealthy Netherlands at the time. In the 16th and 17th centuries, it gained a leading position in Europe, with such famous teachers as Erasmus, Lipsius, Mercator, and Janssen, and became a base for Catholic thought. …
