Hideo Ono - Onohideo

A pioneer in Japanese journalism research. Born on August 14, 1885 in Kusatsu Town, Shiga Prefecture. After attending Zeze Junior High School and the Third Senior High School, he graduated from the German Literature Department of the Faculty of Letters, Tokyo Imperial University in 1910 (Meiji 43). He became a newspaper reporter, working for Yorozu Choho before moving to the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun in 1917 (Taisho 6). From that time on, he aimed to study newspapers academically, and entered the graduate school of Tokyo Imperial University in 1919. In April 1926, he became a lecturer (part-time) at the Faculty of Letters of Tokyo Imperial University, where he taught journalism. In 1929 (Showa 4), he became head of the Newspaper Research Laboratory, Japan's first research facility in journalism, which was established at the Faculty of Letters of Tokyo Imperial University. In 1949 (Showa 24), when the laboratory was dissolved and the University of Tokyo Newspaper Research Institute was established, he became its first director. After retiring from the University of Tokyo in 1951, he became a professor at the Faculty of Letters of Sophia University, and in 1966 he became a professor emeritus at the same university. During this time, he served as the first president of the Japan Society of Newspaper Publishers and Editors, which was founded in 1951, and was awarded the title of Honorary President in 1967. He also received the Newspaper Culture Award in 1955 for his contributions to the promotion of journalism. He passed away on July 18, 1977. His books include "The History of the Development of Japanese Newspapers," "The Fundamentals of Newspapers," "The Story of Kawaraban," and "Fifty Years of Newspaper Research."

日本新聞学研究の開拓者。明治18年8月14日滋賀県草津町に生まれる。膳所(ぜぜ)中学校、第三高等学校を経て、1910年(明治43)東京帝国大学文科大学ドイツ文学科を卒業。新聞記者となり『萬朝報(よろずちょうほう)』を経て1917年(大正6)『東京日日新聞』に移る。そのころから新聞の学術的研究を志し、1919年東京帝大大学院に入学、1926年4月東京帝大文学部講師(非常勤)となり新聞学の講義を担当。1929年(昭和4)東京帝大文学部に創設された日本最初の新聞学研究施設である新聞研究室主任となり、1949年(昭和24)同研究室が発展的解消を遂げ新たに東京大学新聞研究所が創設されるやその初代所長に就任。1951年東大退官後上智(じょうち)大学文学部教授、1966年同名誉教授。この間、1951年創立の日本新聞学会初代会長を務め、1967年名誉会長の称号を受けた。また新聞学推進の功労により1955年新聞文化賞を受賞した。昭和52年7月18日死去。著書に『日本新聞発達史』『新聞原論』『かわら版物語』『新聞研究五十年』などがある。
