A prefix derived from the Greek meaning "opposite" or "antagonizing". When describing stereoisomers of oximes or azo compounds, anti - is used instead of trans -. For the isomers that correspond to cis -, syn - is used, and they are called the anti and syn forms, respectively. When describing conformational isomers, the anti form is used for the form in which the largest atoms or groups are furthest apart.
