1818‐94 French poet. Born on the French island of Reunion in the western Indian Ocean. At first, he followed his father's wishes and traveled to India to become a merchant, but he could not give up his passion for literature, so he settled in Paris around 1845. He sympathized with Fourierism (C. Fourier) and helped edit the journal "Phalange" and other publications. After the defeat of the February Revolution in 1848, he distanced himself from the revolutionary ideas based on Fourierism. He became interested in ancient Indian religion and admired the harmony and order of ancient Greece, searching for a way to heal his disillusionment with the glorification of antiquity.
