French poet. Born on the French island of Reunion in the western Indian Ocean. At first, he followed his father's wishes and traveled to India to become a merchant, but he could not give up his passion for literature, so he settled in Paris around 1845. He sympathized with Fourierism (C. Fourier) and helped edit the journal "Phalange" and other publications. After the defeat of the February Revolution in 1848, he distanced himself from the revolutionary ideas based on Fourierism. He became interested in ancient Indian religion and admired the harmony and order of ancient Greece, searching for a way to heal his disillusionment with the glorification of antiquity.

フランスの詩人。インド洋西部のフランス領レユニオン島に生まれる。はじめ父の意志に従い貿易商たるべくインド旅行などを試みるが，文学への情熱を捨てきれず，1845年ころからパリに定住，フーリエ主義(C.フーリエ)に共鳴し，機関誌《ファランジュ》などの編集に協力する。48年の二月革命の敗北を機に，フーリエ主義に基づく革命思想から遠ざかる。そして古代インドの宗教に関心を抱いたり，古代ギリシアの調和と秩序を憧憬するなど，古代賛美に幻滅をいやす道を求める。
