Kitasato Institute

Kitasato Institute

A medical research institute. In 1892 (Meiji 25), Shibasaburo Kitasato, a bacteriologist who returned from studying in Germany, established the Institute for Infectious Diseases in Shiba Park, Tokyo, with the cooperation of Yukichi Fukuzawa, and conducted research activities from there. In 1899, the institute came under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Home Affairs. In 1914 (Taisho 3), the cabinet of Prime Minister Shigenobu Okuma suddenly announced that the Institute for Infectious Diseases would be transferred to the Ministry of Education and made an affiliate of the Imperial University of Tokyo. In protest, Kitasato, the director, resigned, and all the staff also resigned. He immediately established the Kitasato Institute in Sanko-cho, Shirokane, Shiba, using his own funds, and continued his research activities. In 1918, it became an incorporated association to compete with the government-run institutes.

The institute's objectives include research into the causes, prevention, and treatment of various diseases, the dissemination and development of medical knowledge, the manufacture and testing of preventive vaccines and therapeutic drugs, and the training of leaders in public health administration. In addition to the affiliated hospital, which was formerly Japan's first tuberculosis sanatorium, Yojoen (established in 1893), and Kitasato University, which was conceived as a project to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Kitasato Institute, it also operates the Kitasato Health Care College, the Oriental Medicine Research Institute, the Biofunction Research Institute, and the Medical Environment Science Center. In April 2008, the Kitasato Institute and Kitasato University merged to become the Kitasato Institute. The Kitasato Institute's main building, built in 1915, has been relocated and preserved in Meijimura, Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture. The institute's headquarters is located at 5-9-1 Shirokane, Minato-ku, Tokyo.
