One-big-eared moth - One-big-eared moth

Japanese: イッテンオオメイガ - いってんおおめいが
One-big-eared moth - One-big-eared moth

A moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. It is found in Japan, Taiwan, and China, as well as Malaysia, India, and Afghanistan, and is a major pest of rice cultivation in tropical and subtropical regions. It is also called the Sanka Borer Moth or Sanka Meichu (three-formed burrowing moth) because it occurs three times a year (twice in some areas). Its wingspan is 20-25 mm. Males have straw-colored forewings with small black spots and diagonal lines. Females have cream-colored forewings with larger black spots than males. The larvae feed on the stalks of rice and upland rice, causing great damage. They spend the winter in the stubble as mature larvae. The lowest temperatures occur south of -3.5°C, so in Japan they occur in the southwestern part of Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and islands south of those.
