Onomatopoeia - gion

This refers to the artificial creation of various sounds and animal cries as a way to enhance theatrical effects in plays, movies, radio, television, etc. In Japan, onomatopoeia was mainly stylized in kabuki (traditional Japanese theater), but with the rise of new theater, realistic sounds were required, and many tools were invented and developed to create new sound effects. Eventually, the development and spread of recording discs, records, and tape recorders brought about major changes in sound effects, but traditional onomatopoeia is still used in some cases to create unique theatrical effects.

演劇、映画、ラジオ、テレビなどにおいて、舞台効果を高める一方法として、種々の音や動物の鳴き声を人工的につくりだすことをいう。日本では、歌舞伎(かぶき)においておもに大太鼓で様式化されてきたが、新劇の台頭とともに現実的な音が要求され、新しい効果音をつくりだすために数々の道具が考案開拓された。やがて録音盤、レコード、テープレコーダーの開発普及が効果音に大きな変化をもたらしたが、独特の舞台効果をあげるために従来の擬音を使用する場合もある。
