Forest pathology

An academic field that studies tree diseases and their prevention.

It was first systematized as an independent academic field in 1882 by the German R. Hartig in his book Lehrbuch der Baumkrankheiten. In Japan, lectures on tree pathology began at the University of Tokyo in 1995, and it is now a compulsory subject at universities with forestry departments, but there is no independent course. Although it is also called forest pathology, tree pathology has become established as a field that covers not only forest trees but also revegetated trees and wild woody plants.

樹木の病気とその防除を研究対象とする一学問分野。

　1882年ドイツのハルチヒR.Hartigの著書《樹病教科書Lehrbuch der Baumkrankheiten》によってはじめて独立の学問分野として体系づけられた。日本では95年東京大学で樹病学の講義が開始され，現在林学科を有する大学では必修の学科であるが，独立の講座はない。森林病理学ともいうが，林木だけでなく広く緑化樹木や野生の木本植物をも対象に含める樹病学が定着してきた。
