An academic field that studies tree diseases and their prevention. [Concept and research history of tree diseases] It was first systematized as an independent academic field in 1882 by the German R. Hartig in his book Lehrbuch der Baumkrankheiten. In Japan, lectures on tree pathology began at the University of Tokyo in 1995, and it is now a compulsory subject at universities with forestry departments, but there is no independent course. Although it is also called forest pathology, tree pathology has become established as a field that covers not only forest trees but also revegetated trees and wild woody plants.
