A method in which multiple transport modes, such as railroads and trucks, ships and trucks, work together to transport cargo organically using unit load systems such as containers and pallets. This method aims to innovate logistics by combining transport modes, which have become more diverse through technological innovation, in a rational way to meet the needs of shippers while reducing loading and unloading costs, and is nicknamed fishy back (shipping and trucks) or piggy back (railroad and trucks). Effective intermodal transport requires compatibility of unit loads, the development of vehicles and ships suitable for unit loads, information networks, and the modernization of loading and unloading facilities.
