The first kingdom of Laos was formed in the 14th century by the Lao people, the main ethnic group in Laos. In the founding legend, Khun Buhom (or Khun Borom), the eldest son of Khun Buhom, king of Muang Theen, traveled down the Mekong River and reached Muang Swa, and King Fa Ngum, the 25th king from Khun Lo, is said to be the first king in history. Fa Ngum returned from Cambodia in 1353 and became the first king of the Lan Xang (meaning "a million elephants") Kingdom. He brought a high monk and the Prabang Buddha statue from Cambodia and named the capital Luang Prabang after the statue. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
