The smallest emirate in the United Arab Emirates. Its capital, Ajman, is located in the central region of the country, facing the Persian Gulf. It is surrounded by the Emirate of Sharjah, but also has two exclaves on the Oman Peninsula. In the 19th century, it signed a treaty with Britain and was under British protection under a truce. In the early 1900s, pearl fishing and date palm cultivation were its only economic activities. It gained independence as a member of the federation in 1971. Economically, it is the poorest of the federation, but receives subsidies from Abu Dhabi, a member state, that have allowed for the improvement of the emir's palace, other buildings, and port facilities. The exclave of Manama has a military base, and Mashout is known for its deposits of fine marble. Area: 250 km2 . Population: 76,000 (1991 estimate).
