...After rising into the air, they stretch their necks, push their legs back, and flap their wings powerfully to fly in a straight line. There are one genus and five species of loons in the world, and four species have been recorded in the waters off Japan: the common loon Gavia stellata (illustration), the great loon G. arctica , the white-striped loon G. pacifica , and the white-billed loon G. adamsii . The other species, the common loon G. immer , is found in North America.
