A city in northern Laos. It is a river port city on the left bank of the Mekong River, about 220 km north-northwest of the capital Vientiane, and is located at the confluence of the Khan River. Formerly called Muong Swa, it became the capital of the Lao kingdom of Lan Xang, established in 1353, and was renamed Luang Prabang (Luang means "big") after a golden Buddha statue called Prabang, which was considered the guardian Buddha of the kingdom. In 1563, the capital of Lan Xang moved to Vientiane, but in 1707, when Lan Xang Kingdom split into Luang Prabang Kingdom and Vientiane Kingdom, it became the capital of the former. It later came under Thai control, and in 1899 was incorporated into French Indochina, but in 1945, King Luang Prabang declared the independence of Laos, and the city was the royal capital of the Kingdom of Laos until the establishment of the Lao People's Democratic Republic in 1975. Despite its long history as a royal capital, it is a small and quiet town, currently a commercial center distributing agricultural and forestry products from the surrounding area. Modern industry is underdeveloped, but traditional lacquerware and gold and silver work are thriving. There are many Buddhist temples on Phousi Hill near the center of town, and the old royal palace is located facing this hill with the Mekong River behind it. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1995. It is connected to Vientiane by road. Population 68,399 (1985).
