An old city in the northeastern part of Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The central part is in the northeastern part of the Kuninaka Plain, and the central Ebisu and Minato areas are fishing towns located on the sandbar between Ryotsu Bay and Lake Kamo. Ryotsu Port has developed as an auxiliary port for Niigata Port since the Meiji period, and jetfoils and ferryboats operate between the port and the city, making it the main gateway for tourism in Sado. The O-Sado Mountains in the northwest belong to the Sado-Yahiko-Yoneyama Quasi-National Park. Fixed-net fishing is popular on the Uchikaifu coast, and oyster farming is popular in Lake Kamo. Sado Airport is located on the shore of Lake Kamo. In March 2004, it merged with the Sado County villages of Aikawa, Sawada, Kanai, Niiho, Hatano, Mano, Ogi, Hamo, and Akadomari to form Sado City. ^{233.40 km2} . 17,228 people (2003).

新潟県佐渡島北東部にある旧市。1954年市制。中央部は国中平野北東部にあたり，中心の夷(えびす)，湊地区は両津湾と加茂湖の間の砂州に立地した漁業の町である。両津港は明治以降新潟港の補助港として発達，同港との間にジェットフォイル，フェリーボートが就航して佐渡観光の表玄関をなす。北西部の大佐渡山地は佐渡弥彦米山国定公園に属する。内海府海岸では定置網漁業，加茂湖ではカキ養殖が盛ん。加茂湖畔に佐渡空港がある。2004年３月佐渡郡相川町，佐和田町，金井町，新穂村，畑野町，真野町，小木町，羽茂町，赤泊村と合併し，佐渡市となる。233.40km²。１万7228人（2003）。
