… In 1906, Nordisk, one of the world's first major film companies, was founded by Ole Olsen, and by the 1910s it had already entered its first golden age. High society melodramas about adultery and crime, directed by August Blom and Urban Gad, brought to the screen "two indispensable elements: the vamp and the kiss," and were a huge success around the world. (According to Georges Sador's History of Cinema, "the long, sensual contact of lips, with the woman in ecstasy throwing her head back, caused such a stir that it became a worldwide scandal.) At the same time, Italy created the screen "diva" and became the model for Hollywood's "star system." Just as Denmark transformed the "femme fatale" born from Romantic literature into a "quintessential cinematic character, naming her the vamp" (Georges Sadoul, "History of Cinema"), Denmark became the model for Hollywood, which would conquer the world by selling sex as a commodity under the name of "dream."
