A lake located on a peninsula jutting out into the Gulf of Paria in the southwestern part of Trinidad, Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies. It has an area of 486 km2 and a maximum depth of 75 m. The surface of the lake appears to be a smooth black cake, but it is actually natural asphalt that has seeped in from the surrounding oil fields. It is mined and exported.
