Liao Zhongkai

A Chinese left-wing politician of the Kuomintang. He studied in Japan at the end of the Qing Dynasty and entered Waseda University. He met Sun Yat-sen when he came to Japan, and participated in the formation of the China Tongminghui in Tokyo. After the Xinhai Revolution, he was appointed as a councilor in the Guangdong Governor's Office, but defected to Japan during the Second Revolution. He returned to China in 1920 and participated in Sun Yat-sen's Guangdong military government, serving as governor of Guangdong Province and other positions. In 1923, he met with Soviet leader Joffe in Japan and promoted cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. He was a member of the Central Executive Committee at the First National Congress of the Kuomintang in 1924, and served as head of the Farmers' Department in 1925, but was assassinated by right-wingers including Chiang Kai-shek in the same year. His wife was He Xiangning, who played an important role as a representative to the National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China, vice chairman of the People's Political Consultative Conference, and honorary chairman of the Women's Federation. His son, Liao Chengzhi, was Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and a central figure in relations with Japan.

中国の国民党左派の政治家。清(しん)末に日本に留学して早稲田(わせだ)大学に入学、来日した孫文(そんぶん)を知り、東京で中国同盟会の結成に参加。辛亥(しんがい)革命後、広東(カントン)都督府参議に任じたが、第二革命で日本に亡命。1920年帰国して孫文の広東軍政府に参加、広東省長などを歴任し、1923年、日本でソ連のヨッフェと会見、国共合作を推進、1924年の国民党一全大会で中央執行委員、1925年にはその農民部長を兼任したが、同年、蒋介石(しょうかいせき)ら右派によって暗殺された。夫人は中華人民共和国の全国人民代表大会代表、人民政治協商会議副主席、婦女連合会名誉主席として重きをなした何香凝(かこうぎょう)。子息の廖承志(りょうしょうし)は全国人民代表大会常務委員会副委員長として、対日関係の中心的存在であった。
