This lake is located in Koumi Town, Minamisaku County, in the central-eastern part of Nagano Prefecture. It is located at the northeastern foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains, and was formed in a depression caused by a volcanic mudflow from Mount Tengu. Lake Matsubara is a collective name for a group of small lakes and marshes, including Lake Ina and Lake Cho, but the term generally refers to Lake Ina, the largest of the group. It is 1,123 meters above sea level, has an area of 0.12 square kilometers, a circumference of about 2 kilometers, and a maximum depth of 7.7 meters. It is surrounded by pine forests and other trees, and has been developed into an auto campsite, cottages, and vacation homes. You can enjoy fishing all year round, and it is crowded with people fishing for crucian carp in the summer and smelt on the ice in the winter. It used to be a natural skating rink and has trained many famous skaters. There is a bus service from JR Koumi Line Koumi Station.
