① exsolution : (1) When the properties of the atoms that make up a solid solution, especially the ionic radii, are significantly different, a homogeneous solid solution formed at high temperatures becomes unstable as the temperature drops, and at low temperatures the range in which the solid solution forms is limited to the end members, with an immiscible region forming in between. A solid solution with a composition that falls within this immiscible region is homogeneous at high temperatures, but when cooled slowly it may separate into two or more distinct phases at a certain temperature. This phenomenon is called solid solution separation, which is the transition of a homogeneous mineral into a multiphase intergrowth [Alling: 1921, Katayama et al.: 1970]. It is also translated as elution [Kingery et al.: 1980]. (2) The differentiation of magma into two or more chemically different immiscible parts, or the separation of residual liquid from already formed crystals [Drocher: 1857, Schieferdecker: 1959]. ② liquation : → immiscible Source: Asakura Publishing Dictionary of Petrology Information |
