A radical reform group that emerged in England at the end of the 18th century. It was founded in 1792 by London shoemaker Thomas Hardy and others, with craftsmen and small- and medium-sized merchants as its main members. Behind its formation were the growing demands for parliamentary reform at the time and ideas about human rights inspired by the outbreak of the French Revolution. It was called the Corresponding Society because its purpose was to exchange information among its members and with similar reform groups around the country. It gained more supporters as the French Revolution became more radical, but the Pitt (Junior) government responded with severe repression, and in 1799 the Anti-Assembling Act was enacted, dealing a devastating blow to the society, which disappeared. → Related items Places Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
