The Song of the Nibelungs - Das Nibelungenlied

A medieval German heroic epic poem written around 1205 by a Bavarian or Austrian poet. It consists of 39 chapters and about 2,400 stanzas.

Prince Siegfried of the Low Countries marries King Gunther's sister Kriemhild in recognition of his achievement in helping the marriage of King Gunther of the Burgundians to Queen Brunhild of Iceland. Ten years later, Kriemhild quarrels with Brunhild due to her boasting about her husband, and calls her her husband's mistress. Hagen, King Gunther's vassal, uses this incident as an excuse to kill Siegfried. Hagen then drowns the treasure Siegfried had once obtained from the Nibelungens in the Rhine. Thirteen years pass (until Chapter 19). Kriemhild accepts a marriage proposal from King Etzel of the Huns, and remarries. Thirteen years later, Kriemhild plans to avenge her husband's death when Hagen visits Etzel's country at her invitation. Kriemhild has her servants kill Gunther, and beheads Hagen when he refuses to reveal the location of the treasure. Soon after, she was killed by Hildebrand, a servant of Dietrich von Bern, for this cruel treatment. Thus the Burgundians were destroyed.

The first half of the story is about Siegfried's death, and is based on the legends of Siegfried and Brunhild passed down among the Franks of the Rhine. These ancient legends can be seen today in works such as the Edda, the Welsungasaga, and the Tiddreksaga. The second half is about Kriemhild's revenge and the downfall of the Burgundians, and is thought to have been based on epic poems that were passed down in the Danube basin at the time. This epic poem, compiled by the Nibelungen poets, is led to the tragic ending of the story by a foreshadowing phrase at the end of a four-line stanza, which tells of how "joy ends in sorrow."

The influence of this heroic epic on later generations was enormous, and well-known works include Fouquet's three-part drama series Heroes of the North (1810), Hebbel's trilogy The Nibelungen (1862), and Wagner's four-part music drama series The Ring of the Nibelung.

中世ドイツの英雄叙事詩。1205年ごろ成立。作者はバイエルンあるいはオーストリアの詩人。39章。約2400詩節からなる。

　ニーデルラントの王子ジークフリートは、ブルグント人の王グンテルとアイスランドの女王ブリュンヒルトの結婚を助けた功績により、グンテル王の妹クリームヒルトと結婚する。それから10年後、あるときクリームヒルトは夫自慢がもとでブリュンヒルトと口論し、彼女を夫の妾(めかけ)とよぶ。グンテル王の家臣ハーゲンはこの一件を口実にジークフリートを殺害する。その後ハーゲンは、ジークフリートがかつてニーベルンゲン人から得た宝物をライン川に沈める。そして13年の歳月が流れる（19章まで）。フン人のエッツェル王の求婚に応じてクリームヒルトは再婚する。それから13年後、彼女に招かれてエッツェルの国を訪れたハーゲンに対して夫の仇(あだ)を討とうと図る。グンテルを家来に殺させたクリームヒルトは、宝のありかを明かさないハーゲンの首をはねる。その直後この残酷な仕打ちゆえに彼女はディートリヒ・フォン・ベルンの家来ヒルデブラントに討たれる。このようにしてブルグント人は滅びる。

　物語の前半はジークフリートの死が主題で、ライン地方のフランク人の間に伝わるジークフリート伝説とブリュンヒルト伝説を素材とする。この古伝説は、現在『エッダ』や『ウェルズンガサガ』『ティドレクサガ』などからうかがい知ることができる。後半はクリームヒルトの復讐(ふくしゅう)とブルグント人の滅亡が主題で、その素材は当時ドナウ川流域に伝わっていた叙事詩とみられる。ニーベルンゲン詩人によってまとめられたこの叙事詩は、4行からなる歌節の最後に示される予告的語句によって物語の悲劇的結末へと導かれ、「喜びが悲しみに終わる」経緯が語られる。

　この英雄叙事詩の後世への影響は非常に大きく、フケーの三部劇『北方の英雄』（1810）、ヘッベルの三部作『ニーベルンゲン族』（1862）などのほか、ワーグナーの楽劇四部作『ニーベルングの指環(ゆびわ)』がよく知られている。
