King of Denmark and Norway (reigned 1588-1648). He intervened in the Thirty Years' War under the pretext of aiding German Protestants, but was defeated. He fought with Sweden over interests in the Baltic Sea (1643-1645), losing and ceding the islands of Gotland and Öserr. However, he succeeded in reforming the domestic government and establishing royal authority, and helped Sweden expand overseas, becoming a national hero.
