A philosopher belonging to the Indian Vedanta school. One of his students was Govinda, who in turn was a disciple of Shankara, the founder of the most influential non-dual monist school in the school. Gaudapada's Mandukya Sutra is important in that it is the first surviving independent work to preach non-dual monism (the theory that only the one non-dual real Brahman-Atman is true, and that the phenomenal world is a falsehood that does not exist). The later chapters of this book are more clearly influenced by Mahayana Buddhism, and the final chapter 4 is very similar to the theory of the Yogacara school. The annotations of the Samkhya Sutra are attributed to him, but there is no consensus on the similarities and differences between the two.
