A marine fish of the Oarfish family in the order Odonata (illustration). This fish is known for its deep-sea peculiar appearance. Its body is strongly compressed and elongated like a ribbon, with no scales on its surface, but instead covered with a dense covering of low, wart-like protrusions. The outer edge of the lower jaw is vertical, and the mouth can protrude forward. The dorsal fin begins on the head and reaches the tail, with rays 1 to 6 stretching out to form a crest. The pelvic fins are elongated and thread-like, widening slightly at two points along the way and at the tip, and the caudal fin is also thread-like. It has no anal fins. The body is silvery-white, and each fin is red.

アカマンボウ目リュウグウノツカイ科の海産魚（イラスト）。この仲間は深海性で特異な姿によって知られる。体が強く側扁し細長いリボン状，体表にはうろこがなくて低いいぼ状の突起が密生する。下あごの外縁は垂直で口は前方に突き出しうる。背びれは頭上から始まり尾に達するが，第1～6条が長くのびて〈とさか〉状となる。腹びれは細長く糸状で途中の2ヵ所と先端で少し広がり，尾びれも糸状である。しりびれはない。体部が銀白色で，各ひれは赤い。
