Sutra commentary - Kyotenkoshaku

...Strictly speaking, there is a distinction between lectures and kodan, but in the art of storytelling, they are used synonymously, and kodan has become more common since modern times. Scripture commentary is mainly practiced in Buddhism, but it was also practiced in Confucianism and Shintoism. Historically, it is thought that war stories were added to the series of Buddhist scripture commentary and Dharma talk, and lectures and kodan gradually came to take on the form of storytelling art.
