Magnolia sieboldii - Magnolia sieboldii

A deciduous shrub of the Magnoliaceae family (APG classification: Magnoliaceae). The leaves are broadly obovate, abruptly protruding at the tip, 7-12 cm long, and white on the underside. The flowers have long pedicels and open sideways or slightly downwards in a vase shape, with white petals and pale pink stamens. They flower from May to July. The Japanese name means lotus flower on Mt. Omine in Yamato (Nara Prefecture). They are found from central Honshu to Yakushima Island in Kyushu, and somewhat rarely in the deep mountains of southern China. The basic species is M. s. subsp. sieboldii , which is commonly cultivated in Japan and Europe, and is found in Korea and northeastern China. It can be distinguished from M. sieboldii by its large overall size and crimson stamens. The Ukezakioyamarenge M. × wieseneri E.-A.Carrière is believed to be of hybrid origin and is sometimes cultivated. All three species are celebrated for their beautiful flowers and are used as tea flowers.

モクレン科（APG分類：モクレン科）の落葉低木。葉は広倒卵形、先端は急に突き出し、長さ7～12センチメートル、下面は白色を帯びる。花は長い花柄をもち、横向きないしはうつむき加減に壺(つぼ)状に開き、白い花弁に淡紅色の雄しべが映えて美しい。花期は5～7月。和名は、大和(やまと)（奈良県）の大峰山にある蓮花の意味。本州中部から九州の屋久(やく)島までと中国南部の深山にややまれに分布する。基本種は日本や欧米で一般に栽培されているオオバオオヤマレンゲM. s. subsp. sieboldiiで、朝鮮、中国東北部に分布する。全体が大形で雄しべが深紅色であることなどでオオヤマレンゲと区別できる。ウケザキオオヤマレンゲM. × wieseneri E.-A.Carrièreは雑種起源と推定されているもので、栽培されることもある。3種とも美しい花をめでて茶花とされる。
