Etymologically, the word means something amazing, and generally refers to an extraordinary and astonishing event that is attributed to divine power, and belief in miracles is found in almost all religions. Strictly speaking, it refers to a natural phenomenon whose cause cannot be explained by reason except for supernatural reasons. In Christianity, miracles are only those that involve God, and are considered to be a sign or guarantee of the revelation of divine will. Questions have been raised throughout history about the possibility of miracles, and Augustine and Thomas Aquinas have attempted to defend them. Especially after B. Spinoza, the belief in miracles was criticized, and A. Harnack and others carried out thorough criticism. Today, there is a strong tendency to understand the meaning of miracles as a unique religious experience in the spiritual world.
