Shusuran - Shusuran

Japanese: シュスラン - しゅすらん
Shusuran - Shusuran

A perennial plant of the orchid family (APG classification: Orchidaceae). Also known as velvet orchid. The stems are string-like and crawl along the ground, with roots coming out from each node at the bottom. The upper part slopes upwards and has four or five leaves. The leaves are evergreen and glossy, with a prominent white stripe in the middle. The name is derived from the leaf color. From August to October, five or six flowers bloom on one side of the tip of the stem. The flowers are pale pink and just under 1 cm in diameter. They grow on the forest floor of evergreen forests, and are distributed from the Kanto region and west of Honshu to Kyushu, as well as the Korean peninsula, Taiwan, and mainland China.

The genus Persea is distinguished from closely related genera by characteristics such as the absence of wing-like structures on the stamens, the lack of split stigmas, and the dense hairs on the lip. There are about 40 species, mainly found in temperate and tropical regions, and 10 other species found in Japan, including Persea gracilis, Persea gracilis, and Persea gracilis.
