Weaving has been popular in Okinawa since the Ryukyu Dynasty, and has developed by absorbing elements from Japan, the South, China, and Korea. In particular, Kasuri has become so well-established that it can be said to be the best in the world, and the region has developed its own unique weaving culture by inventing and utilizing all of the materials and pigments that grow naturally or are cultivated in the region, and by creating its own unique techniques. Materials used include banana, choma (ramie), cotton, silk, pongee, and agave (which is no longer woven, but is said to be the material for paulownia boards (tonbyan)).
