Ubico
Guatemalan soldier and politician. Elected president in 1931. To combat the recession, he implemented cuts in public investment, balanced budgets, and wage cuts, and promoted exports of bananas and coffee, while thoroughly suppressing popular movements and establishing an authoritarian regime. He resigned in 1944 and went into exile.
