Interaction between the atmosphere and the ocean. In a narrow sense, it is the exchange of physical quantities such as energy and momentum, and substances such as water and carbon dioxide between the atmosphere and the ocean through the sea surface, but in a broader sense, it includes the processes by which the atmosphere and the ocean affect each other as a result of this, and is also called atmosphere-ocean interaction. On a global scale, solar radiation energy passes through the atmosphere, and most of it is absorbed and stored in the ocean, and is gradually transported from the ocean to the atmosphere as heat and latent heat due to the evaporation of water vapor. 71% of the Earth's surface is ocean, and the ocean, which has a mass 300 times that of the Earth's atmosphere, acts as a huge water and heat reservoir for the atmosphere.

大気と海洋の間の相互作用。狭義には海面を通してエネルギー，運動量などの物理量や水，二酸化炭素などの物質を大気と海洋の間で交換することであるが，広義にはそれに起因して大気と海洋が相互に影響を及ぼし合う諸過程を包含し，大気･海洋相互作用ともいわれる。地球規模でみると太陽放射エネルギーは大気中を透過し，その大部分は海洋に吸収されて蓄えられ，徐々に熱や水蒸気の蒸発による潜熱として海洋から大気へ輸送される。地球表面の71％は海面であり，地球大気の300倍の質量をもつ海洋は大気に対して巨大な貯水槽，貯熱槽としての役割を果たしている。
