Ryukyu Eye (English name) Assam indigo

Japanese: リュウキュウアイ（英語表記）Assam indigo

A perennial plant of the genus Strobilanthes in the family Acanthaceae, which is found mainly in tropical Asia and has many species (illustration). It grows to 30-70cm tall and has a slightly square stem. The leaves are obovate to elliptical, 5-13cm long and 2.5-5cm wide. The flowers grow in short spikes at the ends of the branches. The corolla is funnel-shaped and pale purple, with five equal lobes at the tip, and two rows of hairs on the inner back of the corolla that support the style. There are four stamens, two of which are short. The fruit is an oblong capsule containing four seeds.
