When horse serum is repeatedly injected subcutaneously or intradermally into rabbits every 5 to 7 days, localized edema occurs from about the sixth injection, followed by bleeding, ulceration, and necrosis. This phenomenon was discovered in 1903 by French physiologist NM Arthus (1862-1945). It is thought to be an antigen-antibody reaction caused primarily by circulatory disorders, but in humans, when an antigen is injected intradermally into an individual with a high concentration of immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody, this phenomenon also occurs at the site, with infiltration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and formation of thrombi.

ウサギの皮下か皮内にウマ血清を5～7日ごとに反復注射すると，6回目頃から局所に浮腫が生じ，次いで出血，潰瘍，壊死が起る。この現象をいい，フランスの生理学者 N.M.アルチュス (1862～1945) が明らかにした (1903) 。循環障害を主体とした抗原抗体反応と考えられるが，人間の場合でも，免疫グロブリンG (IgG) 抗体が高濃度に存在する個体の皮内に対応する抗原を注射すると，その部位でこの現象が起り，多核白血球の浸潤や血栓の形成などがみられる。
