Basidiomycetes, order Matsutake, family Tricholomataceae. Also known as elm mushroom. Grows in large numbers overlapping on dead trunks and stumps of elms and other broad-leaved trees in summer and autumn. Rounded or flattened, 4-12 cm in diameter, sometimes pressed into an irregular or semicircular shape. The upper surface is yellowish-white, often tinged with gray or brown. The underside has pendulous folds, and the stalk is almost lateral, sometimes sessile. Very similar to oyster mushrooms. Edible. Found in Hokkaido and Honshu, and distributed in North America, Europe, China, Asia Minor, and Siberia. 担子菌類マツタケ目シメジタケ科。一名ニレタケ。夏秋の頃,ニレその他の広葉樹の枯れた幹や切り株にたくさん重なり合って生える。径4~12cmの丸山形ないし扁平,ときとして押されて不整形になったり半円形になる。表面は黄白色でしばしば灰色または褐色を帯びる。裏面は垂生のひだがあり,柄は側生に近く,ときに無柄である。ヒラタケに非常によく似ている。食用となる。北海道,本州に産し,北アメリカ,ヨーロッパ,中国,小アジア,シベリアに分布する。
