Washi paper is produced on the main island of Okinawa in Okinawa Prefecture. Its origins date back to the 17th century, when craftsmen who learned papermaking techniques in Satsuma began making paper in Kinjo Village, Shuri. In the 18th century, these craftsmen developed "Basho paper." Production ceased during the Meiji period, but was revived thanks to the efforts of Katsu Kimihiko, a disciple of Abe Eishiro, a washi artist designated a Living National Treasure, and continues to this day.
