Graphic designer. Born in Niigata Prefecture. He loved the magazine Chuo Bijutsu and art books from his childhood. He was exposed to Cassandre posters while attending Nihon University Second Junior High School and aspired to become a graphic designer. He then became interested in new European design and art, such as El Lissitzky's photomontages and the Bauhaus. In 1938, he met Natori Yonosuke through Domon Ken's introduction and joined Nippon Kobo, which Natori presided over, and served as art director for the graphic magazine NIPPON , which was written in four languages: English, German, French, and Spanish. In 1951, he participated in the founding of the Japan Advertising Art Association (Nissenbi). He later played a leading role at the forefront of the Japanese design world, and in 1980 he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon. In 1989, he launched Creation through Recruit, which continued until 1994 (20 issues). In 1991 (Heisei 3), he was awarded the Person of Cultural Merit. He died of heart failure on May 12, 1997. His major works include the "Tokyo Olympics Poster" (1964) and the "Osaka World Expo Poster" (1967), and his publications include "Japanese Gardens" (co-authored with Teiji Ito and Takeji Iwamiya) and "The Designs of Yusaku Kamekura" (1983).
