Also known as the Aeolian Islands. A group of volcanic islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea at the southern tip of the Italian peninsula. It consists of seven main islands, including Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, and Stromboli, and ten smaller islands. The islands are home to grape cultivation, sheep farming, pumice mining, and fishing. There are many ruins from the Greek and Roman periods. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2000. Area: 117 km2 . Population: 10,208 (1981).
