1145‐1217 A traveler from Andalusia. Born in Valencia and died in Alexandria. He learned Islamic and Arabic studies from his father and the ulama of the time, and excelled in poetry and prose. He made three pilgrimages to Mecca, and wrote a beautiful diary-like account of his first pilgrimage. He left Granada in 1183, traveled by sea to Alexandria, then crossed the Red Sea from Upper Egypt to Mecca. He then traveled from Baghdad to Damascus and Acca, traveled from there to Sicily, and returned to Granada about two years and three months later in 85.
