Liebermann reaction

(1) A color reaction used to detect nitroso compounds and phenols. When a small amount of phenol is added to a nitroso compound, the mixture is heated, cooled, and then a few drops of concentrated sulfuric acid are added, resulting in a reddish color. When this is diluted with water and made alkaline by adding sodium hydroxide, the color changes to deep blue. Also, when a small amount of nitrous acid and concentrated sulfuric acid are added to phenols, nitrosophenol is produced, which condenses with excess phenol to produce indophenol, which turns dark green. (2) The Liebermann-Burchardt reaction, which is a color reaction for cholesterol, is sometimes simply called the Liebermann reaction.

(1)ニトロソ化合物，フェノール類の検出に利用される呈色反応の一つ。ニトロソ化合物に少量のフェノールを加えて加熱，冷却後濃硫酸を数滴加えると赤みがかった色を呈する。これを水で希釈し水酸化ナトリウムを加えてアルカリ性にすると深青色に変色する。また，フェノール類に少量の亜硝酸と濃硫酸を加えると，ニトロソフェノールが生じ，これが過剰のフェノールと縮合してインドフェノールを生じて暗緑色を呈する。(2)コレステロールの呈色反応であるリーバーマン=ブルヒアルト反応Liebermann‐Burchart reactionを単にリーバーマン反応ということがある。
