A wounded soldier who lost the ability to live due to combat or official duties, and received increased pensions and sickness allowances under the Military Pension Law. During the Russo-Japanese War, more than 37,000 wounded soldiers were admitted due to the modernization of weapons, which became a social problem. On April 7, 1906 (Meiji 39), the government promulgated the Invalids' Institution Law, and opened Invalids' Institutions to support severely wounded soldiers for the rest of their lives at government expense, in an attempt to boost morale. In 1931 (Showa 6), disabled soldiers were renamed disabled soldiers, but during this time more than 300 people were admitted to the Invalids' Institutions.
