Ribalta, Francisco
[Born] 1565 Castellon de la Plana
[Died] January 12, 1628. Spanish painter from Valencia. After studying in El Escorial and Madrid, he settled in Valencia after 1598 and founded the Valencian school. His style is characterized by a deep religious naturalism with dark, fiery colors and chiaroscuro. His works include "Saint Francis Encouraged by an Angel Playing Music" (c. 1620, Prado Museum, Madrid) and "Christ on the Cross Embracing Saint Bernard" (c. 1625/27, same museum).
