A Kabuki dance drama. Nagauta. One act. Written by Kawatake Mokuami. Based on the legend of the demon Ibaraki Doji from Rashomon, this piece is a Matsubamemono (a traditional Noh play) in the style of a Noh play. It was first performed in April 1883 (Meiji 16) at the Shintomiza Theater in Tokyo, with the fifth Onoe Kikugoro as Ibaraki Doji and the first Ichikawa Sadanji as Watanabe No Tsuna. Music composed by the third Kineya Shojiro, choreography by the first Hanayagi Jusuke. Watanabe Tsuna, who cut off one arm of the demon Ibaraki Doji in Rashomon, is closing the door to his house in a state of taboo when his aunt Mashiba comes to see him. After the banquet, the aunt asks to see the demon's arm, and when she finds an opportunity, she snatches it, which immediately reveals its true form as an evil spirit and flies away. Kikugorou V was selected as one of the "Ten Kinds of New and Old Drama," following "Tsuchigumo." It was succeeded by Onoe Baiko VI and Kikugorou VI, and many others have performed it since. Highlights include the dance that tells the story of the time when the aunt was denied a meeting and raised Tsuna outside the gate, the dance at the banquet, the moment when the demon's true nature is revealed, and the one-handed six-way retreat of the after-jite. Baiko VI performed it using the same piece of nagauta, "Tsunayakata." [Toshiaki Matsui] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
