The Japanese era name (nengo). It was used from 857 to 859 during the Heian period under Emperor Montoku and Emperor Seiwa . The previous era name was Saikō . The era name was Jogan . The era name was changed on February 21, 857 (Saikō 4). The era name was changed to Shozui, in recognition of the auspicious gift of a tree linked together (a tree linked together , meaning two trees joined together to form one) from Hitachi Province (Ibaraki Prefecture) and a white turtle from Mimasaka Province (northeastern Okayama Prefecture). The source of the era name is unknown. In 857 (Ten'an 1), Fujiwara Yoshifusa was appointed as the first commoner to become Daijō- daijin (Grand Minister of State).
