A general term for various pathological conditions that occur when the coronary arteries are unable to adequately supply the amount of blood required by the myocardium. Generally, it is often used synonymously with clinical disease names such as angina pectoris and myocardial infarction, but it is actually a term used as a pathophysiological concept of an imbalance between the myocardial oxygen demand and supply. Important pathological conditions that cause coronary insufficiency include coronary artery sclerosis, coronary artery thrombosis, and coronary artery spasm, but coronary insufficiency can also be caused by severe anemia in which the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity is significantly reduced, or by a relative oxygen deficiency in the myocardium due to increased myocardial oxygen consumption caused by significant cardiac hypertrophy.
