…In a 1916 paper, British Egyptologist AH Gardiner considered the characters to be a monophonic script intermediate between Egyptian hieroglyphics and Northwest Semitic script (the so-called Phoenician alphabet), because they were linear characters similar to Egyptian hieroglyphics. He published the results of his partial decipherment. Later, in a 1966 paper, WF Albright identified 23 consonant characters and deciphered most of the inscription. The language is a dialect of Canaanite (Semitic language) from the first half of the 2nd millennium BC, and the contents of these inscriptions, estimated to be from around 1500 BC, are said to be votive inscriptions made by miners at the time to the Egyptian goddess Hathor, who was worshiped in an adjacent temple. …
