…There are about 180 herbivorous species distributed worldwide, with about 25 in Japan. Some of the known species include the three-horned stink bug Acanthosoma labiduroides , whose males have red, pincer-like tails; the small horned stink bug Sastragala esakii , whose small scutella is yellowish-white and heart-shaped; and the small horned stink bug Elasmucha putoni . After laying eggs, the adults of the latter two genera stay still on the egg mass and protect it until it becomes a second-instar nymph. This is mainly to avoid attacks by ants and parasitic wasps, but when ants or other insects try to bite their legs or carry off their eggs, they have the habit of violently vibrating their wings to release a smelly liquid to repel them. …
